FIBER FANTASY
Guest Curated by Sophie Harrison
Over the past few years, interest in fiber art has flourished at the V+V studios, inspiring a wide range of creations—from sewn plushies and crocheted animals to knitted scarves and vibrant yarn sculptures.
Historically, fiber art and disability have intersected in meaningful ways. Fiber art and disability share a deep connection through their emphasis on touch, process, and accessibility. Fiber-based materials invite tactile engagement and offer adaptable methods that support diverse needs.
Once marginalized as “outsider art” or dismissed in favor of more traditional mediums, fiber practices have long offered space for artists to challenge expectations and expand ideas of what art can be.
Fiber art lends itself naturally to exploring and expressing often challenging ideas, including personal histories, bodily narratives, resistance to institutional power, and the fight against inequality.
Sophie Harrison, Guest Curator of Fiber Fantasy, invited artists to imagine and build their own fantastical worlds through traditional fiber techniques. Free from bureaucracy and limitations, artists were empowered to create spaces rooted in their own dreams, desires, and needs.
In this exhibition, softness becomes structure, and bright colors open doors to new possibilities. Fiber Fantasy offers both artists and viewers a chance to step into a playful, magical world — where walls are soft, and imagination takes center stage.
Featuring the work of V+V artists, staff, and local community members, Fiber Fantasy transforms the gallery into a tactile landscape where imagination knows no bounds.
Attendees are invited to touch, explore, and interact with the installations, making this a sensory rich experience for all.
Blurring the lines between art, craft, and play, Fiber Fantasy celebrates the joyful possibilities of fiber art while honoring the medium’s deep connections to accessibility, disability culture, and creative freedom.
