Heidi Hamms does not begin her ink drawings with the finished product in mind, but instead allows her hand to be her guide through the creative exploration and examination of the subconscious. Drawing spontaneous lines and vines, Hamms begins to weave a structure free of the suppression of the rational mind. While she works, latent in the tangles of these structures, recognizable imagery begins to emerge. Adding a playful aspect of her work, the viewer can witness household objects, figures and creatures revealing themselves in time spent studying a finished piece. Her work seems to change from one glance to the next as new findings appear in the artist’s dense patterns.
